We’re avid sports fans.

We particularly love cricket.

Who can blame us?

We grew up idolizing Roy Fredericks and Clive Lloyd. We followed the strokes of Sir Garfield Sobers through our imagination because we had no television. We cheered for Rohan Kanhi when he ‘buck sick’ many of his opponents while listening to commentary on our transistors and still remember how Alvin Kallicharran’s  hit 187 runs against India. We screamed for Lawrence Rowe, swooned over Michael Holding and smile with fond recollections when we hear the names Vivian Richards, Lance Gibbs, Gordon Greenidge, Deryck Murray.

And we cannot forget the imagery we got from our commentators. Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira; Fred Wills; Cecil Bruiser Thomas – commentators with their own pizzazz own floetry; who understood that it was their job to show us the ball, demonstrate the stroke, let hear the whistle of the fast ball or see the curls in the googly.

So we’ll carry on the tradition here. We may never find the commentators of old but we invite you to share your favorite lines from those you remember. Send them to us by email and we’ll post them for you. Send in your own commentary or opinions on other cricketers and let’s make this a forum on which we can  reminisce, exchange and just chat about the one sport that brings all Guyanese together. Send us any photo memorabilia you may have, too and any suggestion you have on how we can make this a place where we can have a virtual meet up. And if there is any one who wants to submit on soccer, please don’t be shy.

Submit all posts to bravbar@yahoo.com for publication.

Thanks for playing ball with us.
