Hard to even imagine that the crop that made Guyana a country, that brought five of its six races from every Continent in the world, is in decline and facing production extinction.

As a staple contributor to the nation’s economy for centuries, one would have thought that the Governments were forward thinking enough to position the crop to adjust with the inevitability of socio economic evolution.

The shuttering of some production facilities along with the dismissal of four thousand employees is an antithetical ending to a rich history carved out of forced labor and indentureship of people who made the product the world’s preferred sweetener.
